Baby Milestones: Month 12

Baby’s Development

By the end of the month your baby should be able to:*

  • Put objects in and out of containers
  • Voluntarily let objects go
  • Shake head “no”
  • “Dance” to music
  • Pull off hat and socks
  • Understand simple commands
  • Identify himself in a mirror
  • Share a toy, but likely want it back

*All babies are different and reach milestones on their own developmental timelines. If your baby has not reached one of the developmental items, rest assured that he or she should be able to do so shortly.

Activities

Modeling Clay!

How about making home-made modeling clay for you and your baby to play with? This activity will help develop sensory skills. Here is a recipe for how to make play dough at home:

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of flour
  • 1 cup salt
  • 4 tablespoons cream of tartar
  • Food coloring for desired color

Instructions:

  • Mix the flour, salt and cream of tartar in a saucepan over high to medium high heat.
  • Add remaining ingredients.
  • Stir until boiling, three to five minutes, making sure the mixture doesn’t burn.
  • Remove from heat and let cool.
  • Store in sealed plastic containers.

Just For Mom

Happy Birthday to You!

Your baby has completed his or her first year of life. This is just as much a celebration for you, as it is for your baby.. You’ve nourished, nurtured, and developed a tremendous bond with your baby. Take a few minutes on your baby’s birthday to give yourself a pat on the back for a job well done.
