Baby Milestones: Month 3

Baby’s Development

By the end of the month your baby should be able to:

  • Raise head and chest while on tummy
  • Lift head 45 degrees
  • Kick and strengthen legs while on back
  • Open and shut hand
  • Reach for dangling objects
  • Grasp and shake hand toys
  • Begin to develop a social smile
  • Kick legs energetically
  • Bring both hands together

*All babies are different and reach milestones on their own developmental timelines. If your baby has not reached one of the developmental items, rest assured that he or she should be able to do so shortly.

Activities

Roger, Roger!!

Don’t feel silly talking to your baby. Verbal stimulation is incredibly important during his or her first year of life. Some researchers have suggested that the more words your baby hears, the higher his or her intelligence will be later in life. Go ahead and chatter away!

Batter up

Give your baby all kinds of simulating objects that are interesting to watch or touch. Encourage him or her to reach or take a swing at these objects. This interaction will help develop hand-eye coordination now and maybe even help his or her baseball skills later in life.

Just For Mom

By now you’ve likely been thinking about how to regain your pre-pregnancy shape. Maybe a gym is a viable option to help you get fit and keep up with your new bundle of energy. Don’t be afraid to ask for free trial membership; finding the right gym for you will make getting in shape much easier. If you are looking at a fitness center, key considerations may include:

  • Availability of day care
  • Fitness classes that may be available
  • Women-specific centers
  • Hours of operation
  • Peak hours at the gym

Did You Know?

  • Some pediatricians recommend bathing baby two to three times a week? More frequent baths may dry out your baby’s skin, especially during winter or in dry climate areas
  • Only 3-4% of babies arrive on their due date.
  • Until babies are six months old, they can breathe and swallow at the same time.
