Baby Milestones: Month 4

Baby’s Development

By the end of the month your baby should be able to:*

  • Sleep about six hours at night before waking (total sleep typically 14 to 17 hours)
  • Roll over (usually stomach to back is first)
  • Sit with support
  • Lift head up 90 degrees
  • Follow a moving object for a 180-degree arc
  • Babble and amuse him or herself with new noises
  • Respond to all colors and shades
  • Recognize a baby bottle or breast
  • Explore objects with mouth
  • Communicate fear, pain, loneliness, and discomfort through crying
  • Respond to a rattle or bell

*All babies are different and reach milestones on their own developmental timelines. If your baby has not reached one of the developmental items, rest assured that he or she should be able to do so shortly.

Activities

Playtime for Mom & Baby!!

You remember the game Peek-a-boo? Bring this classic back! Use your hands, a diaper, or blanket to cover your face and reveal it again while saying those magical words. It may be many months before your baby will initiate the game, but he or she will find great joy playing now.

Introducing New Foods

Breast milk or baby formula is still the primary source of nutrition for your baby. However, some infants start feeding on solid foods between 4-6 mo. Consult your health care provider to see if your baby is ready for solid foods and enjoy introducing your baby to his or her first flavors.

Just For Mom

When is the last time you did something nice for yourself? Motherhood is an exciting, yet exhausting time in life. Make yourself feel special:

  • Buy yourself flowers
  • Garden
  • Read a book
  • Laugh
  • Love
  • Take a bubble bath

Did You Know?

  • Babies are born with 300 bones, but by adulthood we have only 206 in our bodies. This is because bones fuse together later in life
  • Aside from medical costs, some suggest that new parents typically spend $7,000 in a baby’s first year on everything from diapers to baby formula to toys. Be glad you’re saving on baby formula and other nutritional products with our Parent’s Choice® brand!
