Baby Milestones: Month 5

Baby’s Development

By the end of the month your baby should be able to:*

  • Pay attention to small objects
  • Experiment with the concept of cause and effect
  • See across the room
  • Begin using hands in a raking fashion to bring toys near
  • Begin teething

*All babies are different and reach milestones on their own developmental timelines. If your baby has not reached one of the developmental item, so rest assured that he or she should be able to do so shortly.

Activities

My First Album!

Make your baby their own book filled with photos of family members, other babies, favorite objects, and different shapes. Help your baby begin to develop name and face recognition by pointing to the pictures and saying their names. Try using a mini-photo album to store images for display.

Introducing New Foods

Breast milk or baby formula is still the primary source of nutrition for your baby. However, some infants start feeding on solid foods between four and six months. Consult your health-care provider to see if your baby is ready for solid foods and enjoy introducing your baby to his or her first flavors.

Just For Mom

Take some time out of your day to pick up a stack of note cards. Handwrite a nice message to those that are most important to you and send them off. Little gestures like this can really brighten your day, not to mention the days of those who receive your kind words.

Did You Know?

  • Teething babies love to chew on chilled teething rings because the coldness provides a numbing effect on their gums.
  • Did you know that you should consider discontinuing teething-ring use once a new tooth shows? New teeth may puncture liquid-filled teething rings.
