Baby Milestones: Month 9

Baby’s Development

By the end of the month your baby should be able to:*

  • Reach for toys
  • Drop objects and look for them
  • Show interest in grabbing the spoon during eating
  • Pick up tiny objects
  • Begin to identify self in a mirror’s reflection

*All babies are different and reach milestones on their own developmental timelines. If your baby has not reached one of the developmental items, rest assured that he or she should be able to do so shortly.

Activities

Talk to Me!

Have you been teaching your baby to respond? If you haven't already started using gestures with your baby, like shaking your head yes or no and waving bye-bye, now's a good time to start. He or she will quickly begin using this "sign language" with you.

How does it work?

Consider giving your baby a squeaky toy and show him or her how it works. Repetitive action should help your little one understand cause and effect and provide an incentive for repeating your action. Give lots of praise and kisses when your baby makes it squeak.

Just For Mom

Need ideas on how to make your relaxing ‘time away’ bath more enjoyable?

  • Light candles around the tub and turn the lights down low.
  • Add a little bit of baby oil to the water to keep your skin nice and soft.
  • Make your own body scrub…take brown sugar, white sugar, and olive oil. Use equal amounts of all three and mix them together. Start massaging the ingredients from your feet to the top of your leg, rubbing the mixture in as you move along. After you're done, rinse the scrub off in the shower.

Did You Know?

  • In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed the orders that made Mother's Day a national holiday.
  • Mother's Day accounts for more than one-fifth of holiday floral purchases.
